Staying active through a Tri-Lakes winter

Snow and short days make it easy to slow down. These are the habits Kristen shares with clients when the weather turns.

  • Move your outdoor walks to the middle of the day, when it’s sunniest and warmest
  • Spend a few minutes daily at the kitchen counter on heel-to-toe walks and one-leg stands
  • Keep your legs and arms strong indoors with squats, chair stands and wall push-ups
  • No dumbbells? Canned goods and water bottles work as light weights
  • Set up one inviting exercise spot with a mat, light weights and a band
  • Keep warm layers handy so a chilly room isn’t a reason to skip
  • Set weekly activity goals with a friend, even one who lives far away, and check in

On icy days, your session can move online, and the walking guide covers how to stay safe outside in every season.

Walking in Monument, one step at a time

Walking is where many Tri-Lakes clients start. Here’s how we usually build on it.

  1. Walk regularly

    First

Short, regular walks on flat, even paths lay the foundation, with a handrail, cane or walking partner whenever you want one.

  2. Add strength and balance

    Next

Walking alone doesn’t build much muscle, so we add leg strength and balance work that make each walk steadier.

    Is walking enough?

  3. Keep it going

    Then

Walking to errands, a set morning routine and a friend to walk with all make the habit easier to keep.

Frequently asked questions

Do you serve Woodmoor and Jackson Creek?

Yes. We offer in-home training in Woodmoor, Jackson Creek and across the Tri-Lakes area. Your trainer comes to your home, so there’s no drive to a gym on icy winter mornings.

Do you train clients in Sanctuary Pointe, Promontory Pointe and Kings Deer?

Yes. We offer in-home training in Sanctuary Pointe, Promontory Pointe, Kings Deer, Forest Lakes, Red Rock Ranch and downtown Monument.

Do you come to homes in Palmer Lake, and what about Gleneagle?

Yes to both. Palmer Lake is part of our Tri-Lakes service area, just like Monument and Woodmoor.

Gleneagle, Monument’s neighbor to the south, has a Colorado Springs mailing address, so it has its own page under Colorado Springs. For the larger properties to the east, see our Black Forest page.

Training in Gleneagle

Is it safe for older adults to exercise at Monument’s elevation?

For most people, yes. At close to 7,000 feet, Monument is almost 1,000 feet higher than Colorado Springs, and the thinner air takes a little off your hardest efforts. Longtime residents are already acclimatized.

When researchers brought adults averaging 68 years old to moderate altitude, their exercise capacity dipped at first and then recovered within about 5 days. Newcomers and anyone with heart or lung disease should talk with a doctor before starting, and we build intensity up from an easy first session.

Can I keep training if I travel or spend winters elsewhere?

Yes. Many clients switch to online training while they’re away, with live Zoom sessions and the same program in the app, then pick up in-home sessions again when they’re back.

My parent lives in Monument. How do I help them get started?

Start by asking what they want to keep doing, like gardening, travel or time with grandkids, rather than talking about exercise. Then book a free consultation at their home. You’re welcome to be there for that first visit, and a trainer handling the accountability lets you go back to simply being their son or daughter.
