This meal is refreshing, easy to make, and packs a punch with all the nutrients needed for recovery after your workout!
Why It's Great
- Protein (Greek yogurt, nuts): Essential for muscle recovery and repair.
- Healthy fats (nuts, chia seeds, flax seeds): Support overall recovery and reduce inflammation.
- Carbs (granola, berries): Replenish glycogen stores and provide quick energy.
- Antioxidants (berries): Help fight inflammation and promote faster recovery.
Approximate Nutrition
- Greek yogurt (1 cup, plain): ~24g protein, 6g carbs, 5g fat
- Mixed berries (½ cup): ~7–9g carbs, 3–5g fiber, 5–7g sugar
- Granola (¼ cup): ~15g carbs, 3–4g fat, 2–3g protein
- Nuts (¼ cup): ~5–6g protein, 5–6g carbs, 15g fat
- Chia seeds (1 tbsp): ~2g protein, 5g fat, 5g carbs (mostly fiber)
Brain-Boosting Recovery Version
For a simpler after-workout snack, skip the granola and seeds:
- Plain Greek yogurt (¾–1 cup)
- Blueberries or mixed berries (½ cup, fresh or frozen)
- Walnuts or almonds (1–2 tablespoons, chopped)
- Optional: a drizzle of honey or a sprinkle of cinnamon
Why this is great for the brain:
- Protein (Greek yogurt) helps muscles recover after exercise and provides amino acids that support brain signaling.
- Healthy fats (nuts) support brain cell membranes and help reduce inflammation.
- Carbohydrates (berries) replenish energy after workouts, support lactate clearance (which helps the BDNF process), and are rich in antioxidants linked to better memory.
Bonus: This combo supports the lactate-to-BDNF pathway by refueling muscles, supporting brain recovery, and avoiding blood sugar spikes from refined snacks. Read more about that pathway in Why Getting a Little Breathless Is Good for Your Brain.
